Rip Matteson's art celebrated the beauty of women in particular. In the artist's words, the works depict "a love affair with art and a celebration of the female form and face." Matteson feels that women, his "subject of choice," are nature's masterpiece. Mr. Matteson decided he would become an artist while still a boy growing up in Oakland, California where he was born in 1920. He studied art at San Jose State College, California College of Arts and Crafts, and the Scuola di Belie Arte in Rome. He received the Master of Arts and Ph.D. Degrees from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught art in Monterey and later, Laney College in Oakland, and retired from education and teaching in 1983. After retiring, he revived his interest in cartooning, and his cartoons have been published in Saturday Review, Punch, Playboy, The Saturday Evening Post and many other national publications. Watercolor & Gouache Paintings
November 4th 2010
Reception for the artist: Berkeley resident Joanna Katz was born in Princeton, New Jersey and has been painting since her high school days in Ann Arbor. She is primarily a realistic painter. Her subject matter includes flowers, landscapes, and representations of litter contrasted with plant life. The plein air pictures range from her Berkeley back yard to scenes of southeastern France where her sister lives. With her paintings of plants and litter, Joanna expresses her discomfort with our disregard of our earth. She use watercolor for the natural forms, and often some acrylic to paint newspapers, cigarette butts, plastic bags, soft drink cans. These paintings are poignant, but still quite beautiful. Click here to learn more about the artist. The paintings are very worth seeing, and we'd love to see you here for the reception.
